Gopher Genealogy: Who Was the Real Giffen of Tennessee? Part Two
While the family of Volney Giffin felt he was the Giffin written about in the poem Little Giffen of Tennessee by Francis Orray Ticknor, there is reasonable question of doubt that he was. In the city where Francis Ticknor lived and died there is a historical marker containing the following:
"TORCH HILL"
On the summit of the rise to the east is the site of "Torch Hill", home of Dr. Francis Orray Ticknor (1822-74), author of the famed war story, "Little Giffen of Tennessee". Dr. Ticknor was a physician at the Confederate Hospital on Upper Broad St. in 1861-1865.
Giffen, a 16 year old Confederate soldier, was treated at the hospital for serious wounds. Dr. Ticknor took the boy to his home where Mrs. Ticknor nursed him. Before his wounds entirely healed, "Little Giffen" voluntarily took up his rifle and returned to battle. He was never heard of again.
The Creek Indians used "Torch Hill" for signal fires, giving the hill its name.

There was an Isaac N. Giffin born in Tennessee in about 1845, which makes him the possible confederate soldier.?Possible?listings for him are found in the 1850 Census in Dickson County, TN?and 1860 Census in Montgomery County, TN.
Now back to Volney Giffin and what was discovered about him. For general family information there are two listings in Rootsweb.com family trees that portray a fairly accurate family history. Nothing was found on familysearch.org. in the family trees.
Ancestry.com provided the following records For Volney Giffin. Census records for him for the years 1920, 1910, 1900, 1890, 1880, 1870, 1860 with his mother who had remarried, 1850 with his parents, two brothers John S. and George Washington Lafayette and his sister Celestial. His death certificate, clearly lists his parents Bartley Giffin and Ailsey Edington, his birth 22 March 1844 in Tennessee, his death 14 July 1924 in Knoxville and that he was widowed.
In the U.S. Southern Claims Commission Master Index, 1871-1880 found at ancestry.com there was a link to fold.3?that has a forty-three page file on two denied claims filed for Bartley Giffin. In his testimony within that file, he notes that he has three sons fighting with the 6th East Tennessee Infantry, John, Volny and Lafayette and three nephews Frank, John and William Kidd. The file contains testimony of family members, friends and relatives. They provide a wealth of family history information. By his own testimony, Bartley was a Union sympathizer during the entire war. He?neighbors?said he was a?"fool hardy Union man"; "in fact was just as loyal to the Union cause as it was possible for anyone to be."
Bartley continues to note that he is age 56 and lived here seventeen years. He resides three miles south of Knoxville, he was born in Blount County, Tennessee, and he lived in Knox County since he was a man child. At the commencement of the war he was farming and lived in his home until 29 August 1863 when he left home and went to the state of Illinois. He remained there until October 1863, returning to Knox County, Tennessee. He assisted in piloting Union refugees of East Tennessee to Kentucky and helped his nephew escape the Rebel Army after which the nephew became a Union soldier. He furnished his sons with money and supplies when they left to join the army. Bartley said he was given a permit by the U.S. authorities to sell goods of any and every kind.
In his?testimony Bartley claims he was threatened and abused by Rebel soldiers, but they did provide him a pass. Later the Union soldiers camped about three miles away, with some pickets stationed in his field about 100 yards from the house. He claimed that they took a heifer cow weighing 200 pounds, three or four hogs, and about fifty bushels of corn. There were witnesses stating they had seen the items taken and acknowledging his faithfulness to the Union cause. He was asking for $142 in the first claim and $125 in the second, but both were denied.
Now I realize how long this story is, so I have decided to write a third part for Wednesday which will cover the Compiled Military Service Records of the three sons, one possible nephew and a little more on Isaac Newton Giffin. Please bear with me. Then I will share who I feel the real Little Griffen of Tennessee is.

CAIRO (AP) ? In the sweltering heat Sunday, tens of thousands of Muslim Brotherhood supporters had jammed into Tahrir Square ? the birthplace of Egypt's revolution ? to learn who won its first free presidential election.
They were not disappointed.
When they heard the head of the election commission declare on live TV that their candidate, Mohammed Morsi, had won with 51.58 percent of the vote, a deafening roar arose from the iconic square in central Cairo.
His supporters danced in a joyous celebration not seen in the square since Hosni Mubarak was forced out on Feb. 11, 2011.
They knelt on the ground in prayer. They waved flags. They set off firecrackers. Some released doves carrying a photo of Morsi, who defeated Mubarak's former prime minister, Ahmed Shafiq, in a runoff election.

HTC might be over selling it a bit with the top secret stamp, and the foot note sort of indicates that your next One device wont be interpreting Fido's barks. So, really, that only leaves one logical conclusion -- HTC is working on a voice control app. It shouldn't come as any surprise if you've been paying any attention to the mobile landscape these past few years. Google kicked off the party with Voice Actions and Apple gave the speech recognition tech some personality with Siri. Now Samsung has S-Voice and LG has Quick Voice... what's a Taiwanese manufacturer to do? Presumably make your own speech-driven virtual assistant. When will it debut, what will it be called? Who knows, but judging from the image above it seems safe to assume that HTC's new tool will be delivered as software update to at least some existing handsets.

What a kind and wise movie this is.
[The] film is built around performances by two real-life brothers who are as unaffected, spirited and lovable as I can imagine, and one of the pleasures of "I Wish" is simply spending time with them.

The sort of small film of real consequence that, as a kid, I remember seeing and completely losing myself in: That was my life.
A wistful heartbreaker from the Japanese master of quiet observation, Hirokazu Kore-eda.
Like a train, "I Wish" is slow to build momentum, then it carries us away in a wondrous rush.
You watch it remembering the days when you should have walked but simply had to run, and when you believed that, if you wished hard enough, your dead pet just might come back again.
Despite its youthful perspective on adult concerns, the feature generates a few profound moments of basic need in the midst of an atypical men-on-a-mission film.
The lives of the children in "I Wish" seem to be expanding in front of our eyes, as evidenced by their changing wishes, which become bigger and more beautiful as their plan proceeds.
A flurry of details that reveal a grand canvas of love and loyalty if we take a step back.
A film that moves a bit too slowly for its own good but has remarkable cumulative strength by its emotional finale.
At its worst, I Wish is static. At its best, it has the warmth and subtlety of classic Asian works by Edward Yang and Yasujiro Ozu.
Koreeda's like a modern Ozu, documenting the trickle down effect of global economic changes on once strongly held traditions of Japanese family life.
Wistful, light and sweet.
A lovely, authentic exploration of family bonds tested by separation. Though the film is overlong at 128 minutes, it is a warm and wise winner.
If the Dardenne brothers were Japanese instead of French-Belgian, or perhaps set out to craft a homage to Yasujiro Ozu that was crossed with a whimsical yet melancholic version of The Parent Trap, it might well resemble this.
All of the kids in "I Wish" come across as real and believable, a tribute to Koreeda's directing skills working with children.
Never for a moment did I think that the two boys at the heart of Hirokazu Kore-eda's simply told and layered film I Wish were actors.

Navy commander fired for collision with fuel ship

The USS Essex, a U.S. Navy amphibious assault ship, arrives in Hong Kong harbor for a scheduled port visit. The Essex had been positioned in Asia for 12 years and was returning to port in San Diego when it collided with a refueling ship off the coast of southern California on May 16.

The Navy has fired the commander of the Navy assault ship Essex which collided with a Navy oil supply ship at sea last month, the Navy Times reported Tuesday.
Capt. Chuck Litchfield was relieved of his duties due to a "loss of confidence in his ability to command," over the May 16 collision, said the Times, citing Navy spokesperson Cmdr. Tamsen Reese.
The USS Essex, a big-deck amphibious assault ship ran into the USNS Yukon, a replenishment oiler during the approach for a routine refueling, about 120 miles off the coast of southern California on May 16, sending both ships to port for emergency repairs, the Navy News Service reported at the time of the collision. It said there were no injuries or fuel spills caused by the accident.

Capt. Chuck Litchfield has been fired as commanding officer of the amphibious assault ship Essex.
An ongoing investigation has indicated "a number of factors that contributed to the collision," according to Reese. The problem began with the partial loss of rudder control and was followed by "a breakdown in command and control, in bridge resource management and in communication between the two ships," she told the Times.
The Essex was returning to San Diego after completing 12 years as the Navy's only permanently forward-deployed amphibious assault ship in Sasebo, Japan.
Litchfield has been temporarily reassigned to the Naval Air Force Pacific staff in Coronado, the Navy Times reported.

Calif man rescued after whale hits boat off Mexico
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? A Northern California man was rescued after his 50-foot boat was struck by a whale while he sailed alone about 40 miles off the western coast of Mexico, authorities said.
The impact from the collision knocked out the sailboat's steering and the vessel began taking on water late Tuesday, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Pamela Boehland said.
Max Young of Sacramento stuffed a mattress into the hole caused by the whale, turned on four bilge pumps and was "trying to bail out water as fast as he could, because he didn't know how long it would take to be rescued," his wife, Debra Young, told The Associated Press.
He also activated an emergency beacon, which alerted the Coast Guard.
"His EPIRB delivered an exact position to us, contact information that allowed us to quickly discern the sail plan of and number of persons on the vessel, and really took a lot of the search out of the search and rescue," said Lt. Charles Kelly, of the Coast Guard's command center in Alameda, Calif.
With that information, officials at the command center were able to immediately direct a merchant ship, which was about 60 miles away, to the sinking craft.
Meanwhile, as the rescue efforts were just beginning, Young was initially unaware that the boat was taking on water, his wife said.
"He was steering the boat and trying to get it back on course," Debra Young said. "It took him a while to realize he didn't have any steerage at all. It took him a bit longer to realize he was taking on water."
When the freighter arrived at around 4 a.m. Wednesday, Young scrambled off his boat by a rope ladder thrown by the ship's crew.
Young had been on the final leg of a trip from the East Coast to a marina in Emeryville, Calif., when the collision took place. The 67-year-old has been sailing for at least 30 years, but having worked on boats with his father, who was a commercial fisherman, he's been on the ocean most of his life, his wife said.
Debra Young said she has been able to talk to her husband while he's on board the merchant ship. He's not expected to make it back to Sacramento for another week or so.

You've got to know when to hold them. And know when to fold them. That's the gospel according to Kenny Rogers, the Grammy and Country Music Award-winning singer who outlined this strategy in one of his most famous hits, "The Gambler."
Well, Rogers is still out on tour, racking up good reviews for his latest appearances, but his latest real estate move would definitely have to fall in the "Fold 'Em" category.
On June 26, the stunning Athens, Georgia-area home designed and built in 2009 by Rogers on 150 acres of wooded property will go up for an absolute auction.
That means there is no reserve necessary to bid on the 5-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom house at 7356 Brockton Road, which is about 10 minutes outside of Athens. All it takes is a $100,000 certified check to register for your chance to buy the stunningly elegant spread.
Rogers first listed the 5,681-square-foot, Polynesian-inspired home for $3.5 million in January 2012, and reduced the price to $2.85 million in April. By mid-May, however, Rogers decided to take another tactic, enlisting an auction company to take over the sale ? an increasingly more common practice for some high-end properties for which it is difficult to establish market value.
Rogers, who has built and sold other luxury estates, including another massive resort-like estate in the Athens area, says this Georgia special "one of a kind." Must be, since it has its own Kenny Rogers Auction website that indicates previews of the property begin on June 22.
