Really Michigan? Rasmussen Says Stabenow Leads Top GOP Rivals for MI Senate

Ow. - ED
"Climate change is very real," she confessed as she embraced cap and trade's massive tax increase on Michigan industry - at the same time claiming, against all the evidence, that it would not lead to an increase in manufacturing costs or energy prices. "Global warming creates volatility. I feel it when I'm flying. The storms are more volatile. We are paying the price in more hurricanes and tornadoes."

Senator Debbie Stabenow, Democrat - Michigan

The latest poll result from Rasmusen is a little disconcerting:
Incumbent Democrat Debbie Stabenow is still outrunning her two leading Republican challengers in Michigan's U.S. Senate race.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Michigan Voters shows Stabenow with 47% support, while businessman Clark Durant picks up 39% of the vote. Four percent (4%) like another candidate in the contest, and 10% are undecided.

I can't imagine how anyone who pays the slightest amount of attention to what is going on in Washington could vote for Debbie Stabenow. Seriously.

Also, she has gained nation notoriety when Citizens Against Government Waste named Stabenow "Porker of the Month" in March of this year.
In celebration of St. Patrick's Day earlier this month, and in recognition of the potfuls of taxpayer gold that have been squandered on subsidizing ill-advised green energy programs, Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) has named Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) Porker of the Month for submitting an amendment that would have extended federal subsidies for alternative fueling stations, biofuels, refined coal, energy-efficient appliances, wind power, and similar initiatives.

Sen. Stabenow's ultimately unsuccessful amendment exemplifies the public policy fallacy gripping the Obama administration and many lawmakers, which holds that the key to unlocking a green energy surge is simply more taxpayer money.

"The past six months have been marred by examples of the futility of picking winners in energy markets...Failures at Solyndra, Ener1, Beacon, Tesla, Amonix, Evergreen Solar, SpectraWatt, SunPower, and others make it obvious that the government has about as much chance of stumbling across a four-leaf clover as it does of being successful as a venture capitalist," declared CAGW President Tom Schatz.

There still is a lot of time between now and November but it has to be said....

Really Michigan? The citizens of Michigan would actually vote to return Stabenow to Washington where she can continue feeding at the taxpayer trough?

ESET Smart Security 5 review | Privacy PC

Posted by david b. on July 29, 2012

Outstanding usability and excellently balanced feature set make ESET Smart Security an unmistaken choice.

Download

Being light on system resources and offering a commendably high degree of Internet protection are prime ?business cards? of ESET Smart Security. The company behind this particular product, as well as quite a few other security oriented solutions, is truly an old stager in the industry, its origin dating back to the late 1980s when the first known computer viruses came to be. ESET has since succeeded in becoming one of the world?s most commercially successful IT security projects, with over 500 employees and millions of satisfied customers all over the globe. Covering the niches of antivirus, antispyware, mobile security and Internet security both for home and business, the vendor delivers all-inclusive protection, dedicated support for a vast customer base, and sets remarkable usability benchmarks.

Some of the things most commonly associated with ESET Smart Security are great user experience, well-balanced feature set and an extensive list of threats it is fit to take care of. More specifically, the benefits include proactive protection based on ESET?s innovative ThreatSense technology, outstanding performance, minimum annoyance, emphasis on timely updates, Host-Based Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS), parental controls, antispam, game mode, external device scanning, and more.

Since the overall impression is derived from details, our intent here is to single out specific facts about this application and test it by several pre-defined criteria so as to measure its functionality and reliability, and put it all on a tangible scale.

System Requirements

Operating System:

  • Windows 2000 / XP / Vista / 7

Hardware:

  • Processor: Intel or AMD x86-x64
  • 55 MB free disk space

Usability

Availability of 30-day free trial along with the commercial distributive calls forth the first choice you are to make here. Notwithstanding the pretty large functional load on the program, it turned out a trifle to use. Installation went smooth and quite fast, but for one minor thing that kind of added an additional click to the procedure, i.e. a screen asking whether you are willing to have the PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) protection activated. We?d rather this feature was included into the security suite by default without the user being asked during setup. And still, this wasn?t really an issue, so the app installed within a little over a minute, which is perfectly fine. We noted that the software doesn?t require a mandatory reboot after setup ? that?s sort of a pleasure to know because this particular thing tends to annoy some users.

User interface might appear simplistic, but that?s definitely a positive trait. We believe the absence of upper menu to be a virtue, as all the main items are fitting perfectly into the left-hand navigation pane ? so why occupy excessive GUI space? We liked the color scheme, too. Light-blue is dominating here; we guess this contributes to the peace of mind the vendor tried to ?hard-code? into the app.

ESET Smart Security?s interface turned out to be sufficiently informative, displaying your current protection level split by a number of targeted areas. The ?Computer scan? tab provides additional options such as showing scan with a log in a new window and enabling shutdown after scan. Using ?Setup? menu, you can enable / disable specific protection modules within four sections: Computer (Real-time file system protection, HIPS, Gamer mode), Network (Personal Firewall), Web and email (Web access protection, Email client protection, Antispam protection), and Parental control. Clicking ?Tools? enables defining your security preferences, temporarily disabling protection, managing the quarantine, accessing advanced options etc. It?s handy that hovering with your mouse over GUI items displays brief infotips on what a particular feature does.

The product?s performance parameters ensure you don?t have to wait long for the key tasks to be completed. CPU usage goes up once in a while during regular updates, but this in no way affects productivity of your system. On the whole, ESET Smart Security is a really resource saving utility that doesn?t put much of a burden on a PC, which shows it to advantage as compared to most of the competing programs.

Features

What makes a good Internet security suite is a feature set that facilitates controls and contributes to protection on an appropriate level. Let?s see if that?s the case with ESET Smart Security 5. Below is a brief overview of each key feature integrated into this application:

  • ThreatSense Technology denotes ESET?s understanding of antivirus protection. This is a sophisticated engine composed of advanced heuristics (code analysis, emulation, generic signatures) and the conventional malware signatures, enabling timely detection of zero-day infections and new viruses belonging to known families. This contemporary approach is a step towards catching up with cyber criminals, no matter how hard an objective that is. ThreatSense proved to effectively detect and neutralize worms, viruses, trojans, rootkits, adware, potentially dangerous applications and other pests.
  • Antispyware feature complements the antivirus to respond to the varied digital threatscape out there. This component targets online parasites that aim at violating your privacy and deploying identity theft.
  • Host-Based Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS) is liable for monitoring network activity to spot and cease unauthorized access attempt or other malicious behavior. The bad packets therefore get dropped to help you evade further outcomes of infestation, intrusion or unsolicited modifications made to your system.
  • Cloud-Enhanced Whitelisting, or ESET Live Grid, is a reputation-based technology powered by the cloud environment to ensure fast detection of malware items. This technique is capable of distinguishing between reputable files and viruses, thus you get protection against the newest bad stuff and social media exploits in real time.
  • To prevent contamination from optical storage devices (CD, DVD) or USB memory drives, ESET Smart Security accommodates Removable Media Control feature. It disables autorun from these drives and blocks by device ID.
  • Firewall complements the corresponding default feature provided by the operating system to augment protection value and implement additional counter-intrusion and anti-hack measures.
  • Antirootkit is a feature which is intended to expose and intercept malicious objects that are made to do a great job hiding certain processes on the compromised machine. Rootkits attempt to keep security software from detecting malware executables, thus promoting further infestation of a PC. ESET therefore has a countermeasure of its own for this latent menace.
  • Antispam functionality is aimed at blocking potentially dangerous or misleading emails, including attached objects that might be bundled with trojans or other insecure items.
  • Parental Controls feature makes it feasible to manage your kids? web-surfing activity, allowing restrictions by website category (adult, gambling etc.), specific URL and even the time spent online.
  • Internet Security Training is completely unique about ESET Smart Security. This comes in the form of interactive instructions on appropriate online behavior, outlining security tips and precautions to take while browsing the web.
  • Unwilling to get pop-ups and frustration from routine security tasks triggered while you are playing games on your PC? Gamer Mode does the trick here by suspending popup alerts, scanning and scheduled tasks when you are in full-screen mode. While your computer remains protected, the security modules require no interaction on your end. Gamer Mode also keeps you from getting distracted while viewing videos or doing full-screen presentations.

Efficiency

In terms of overall protection effectiveness, there is some room for ambiguity. Results obtained by a number of authoritative evaluation resources that tested ESET Smart Security 5 state it does not rank to be in the very top of the grading. For instance, AV-TEST?s latest scores by protection criterion are 3.5 out of 6.0 for both Windows XP and Windows 7, being decent results, yet lower than the industry average. Things with repair are somewhat worse, ranging 2.0-4.0 out of 6.0 for Windows XP and Windows 7 respectively, both results passing their certification. Despite the above somewhat mediocre rates, on the other hand, the product did a fairly good job in our unbiased test, detecting and removing most of the malicious components from the infested lab machine ? at least, none of the critical threats that could inflict serious damage to the system were missed. Furthermore, the latest AV-Comparatives retrospective test ranked ESET number 6 out of the total of 17 most popular security applications. Moreover, the really low false positives rate and good across-the-board user feedback are by no means to be neglected. From where we sit, we are mostly inclined to affirm that ESET Smart Security is a program that will keep you generally safe and allow for no irrecoverable system damage.

Help & Support

ESET?s support is split into two groups: home and business, each one containing an extensive number of options to get help when you need it. Home support (the one applicable for ESET Smart Security) is composed of Frequently Asked Questions, documentation, knowledgebase videos, user forum, online form for submitting your case (not to be confused with live support). In regards to direct support, the telephone contacts are kind of hard to find on their website. The ?Contact? page does contain the customer service number, but shouldn?t it be indicated right there on ?Support? page as well? You can additionally follow customer support in Twitter where they add links to new articles and videos related to a variety of issues. But the really unique thing about this product is the ?Cybesecurity Training? interactive module which appears to be a comprehensive and thorough tutorial on how to protect your PC and online identity ? this is probably one of the best instances of customer security orientation that we have seen.

+/- (Pros/Cons)

  • Trial version available
  • Easy to use
  • Light on system resources
  • Very low false positives rate
  • Remarkable parental controls
  • ?Cybersecurity training? feature
  • Unstable repair scores
  • Support: no live chat, phone numbers hard to locate
  • Expensive

Bottom line

ESET Smart Security is one of the least obtrusive Internet security suites we have tested. Its features are more than enough for assuring convenience and appropriate protection for your online activities. While repair efficiency and overall protection scores are fluctuating across different tests, the chance of outer intrusion going through, or critical infections infiltrating into your machine is negligible. Outstanding usability and excellently balanced feature set make this product an unmistaken choice.

A trade show display could represent a substantial expense for those seeking this powerful marketing and sales strategy. There are a number of solutions on the marketplace, but which path you take will depend on a number of elements peculiar to your own company situation. We?ll take a very brief go through the three avenues ready to accept you with renting, leasing and purchasing trade show equipment.Buying the DisplayOutright purchase means you own the property and this lowers your ongoing operating costs when you pay cash. The purchase will be taken to your balance sheet in your reports and tax allowable depreciation will be deducted from your taxable earnings for the company purchase given on the existence of the display.Buying a display allows you to completely customize the display to your own needs and you are always certain of its availability when you need it ? in the end, you own it! You?re able to include your trade show marketing together with your brand marketing to the fullest extent and there are no limitations on where and when it can be used.Buying a display will probably be the cheapest and most tax successful approach to finding a show display in the long term.Leasing the DisplayAn option to outright purchase would be to arrange funding on the display and to lease the equipment (instead of letting it ).This will lower your upfront money cost of acquiring the display, and at the same time you can enjoy sole and unique use while still having a fully personalized display. For all practical purposes you possess it fully until the final financing fee whereupon you?ll often get outright ownership or the equipment will be delivered depending on the lease terms. The cost of the asset may or may not be taken to the balance sheet and depreciated depending on the kind of lease contract. Usually, it is common for a rental arrangement to be framed to allow this and so you obtain the tax relief on the depreciated amounts taken to business profits. In addition, the finance element of the lease charges are taken immediately to the gain and loss account to be offset as an expense in a similar way to any interest paid on a mortgage agreement. This method will increase Return on Investment in the short to medium term for many consumers, and may also give probably the most cost effective method of acquiring property provided the tax advantages available.Renting the DisplayIt is achievable to hire a trade show display, however you will be constrained in terms of customization and supply. This is definitely an ideal arrangement to appear at where you are either a new entrant to the trade show market, or are looking at tinkering with your trade show structure or need additional but short-term display equipment. The full cost of hiring the display will be taken against your business earnings for tax purposes and for short-term use this will provide the maximum ROI available.

Apple Considered Investing Hundreds of Millions in Twitter

This entry needs translation. To help us and submit a translation please click here

Apple considered a large investment in Twitter reports the New York Times and Wall Street Journal.

The NYT says Apple was in talks with Twitter 'in recent months' about a strategic investment.

Apple has considered an investment in the hundreds of millions of dollars, one that could value Twitter at more than $10 billion, up from an $8.4 billion valuation last year, these people said. They declined to be named because the discussions were private.

There is no guarantee that the two companies, which are not in negotiations at the moment, will come to an agreement. But the earlier talks are a sign that they may form a stronger partnership amid intensifying competition from the likes of Google and Facebook.

The WSJ has a slightly different report saying that Apple held discussions with Twitter more than a year ago.

Apple Inc. held discussions with Twitter Inc. more than a year ago about taking a strategic investment in the short-messaging service, according to a person familiar with the talks. People familiar with the matter said there are no current formal investment or acquisition discussions between the companies.

You can download Twitter from the App Store for free.

Political Science Prof Asks: Is Algebra Necessary?

I disagree.

I spent a fair amount of time once with a man who was educated in the fashion you seem to think is appropriate. In his case, he'd started out working on the factory floor at an IBM manufacturing facility in Texas (30 years ago when they still made stuff in the US), and had qualified for and taken a technical math and computer science education culminating in a master's degree. IBM's "school" was accredited and his degree was a real one, but it included only technical subjects; no liberal ed at all. Prior to his IBM education he had barely graduated from high school -- and I'm not sure how he did, frankly.

He was a highly intelligent man, very articulate and perceptive. However, as soon as the discussion left technology his utter lack of education became instantly apparent. He was even ignorant of basic principles of physics -- he knew a fair amount about electronics, but in mechanics he understood less than most high school dropouts I've known. His ability to understand politics was nonexistent because he didn't know any history, or even understand basic civics. And don't even attempt to talk about literature, philosophy, etc.

Now, obviously, a big part of his ignorance was due to his own utter lack of interest in anything outside of computer science. You can't obtain a MSCS without being able to read, and anyone who can read can educate themselves. But the point was that the difference between him and the typical college graduate -- even though he was almost certainly smarter than said typical graduate -- was stark and obvious, and it wasn't in his favor. His lack of general knowledge wasn't just a problem when socializing, either, it often caused him to make dumb decisions that affected the business, and you simply could not put him in front of customers, because unless the discussion was laser-focused, he'd eventually say something that made him look like an idiot.

After my experience working with him, I decided I wholeheartedly agree with the liberal education philosophy. The worst part about it was that his deep, narrow knowledge and utter lack of knowledge outside of a single field made him believe, quite firmly, that there really wasn't much to know outside of his field. It's often said that that the primary purpose of a BA/BS is to teach the student the breadth of his own ignorance. Well, this guy never learned that.

We don't all need deep knowledge in every area, but an introductory course in each of the major areas of human knowledge really does add significant value. It makes us more rounded, teaches us some much-needed humility and, well, educates us. That education is what differentiates a university degree from a vocational certificate, and the former is more valuable than the latter.

An Interview with Ron Dunning on his Jane Austen Geneaology ...

Some of you may be familiar already with the Ancestry.com Jane Austen Family Tree?created by Ronald Dunning.? It is quite the amazing compilation of ancestors and descendants of ?Dear Aunt Jane? ? a resource for Austen fans and scholars alike the world over.

So we are happy to announce that Mr. Dunning has continued with his Austen genealogical work and his new and improved website is to be ?unveiled? at the Jane Austen Society meeting tomorrow (21 July 2012) at the Chawton House Library [an article about the history of the website will appear in the next JAS Report] -?details of the meeting are here: http://www.janeaustensoci.freeuk.com/pages/AGM_details.htm.

The link to the new website is here: http://www.janeaustensfamily.co.uk/? where you will find new content, the complete transcribed text of the manuscript of Akin to Jane, and links?to the?original RootsWeb site noted above [see below for information on how best to?access the data.]

Ron has been very kind to answer a few of my?questions about how and why he took on this monumental research project, so hope you enjoy learning more about it ? then you must take some time to search the database ? it is great fun to poke around in when you might have an extra minute or two on any given day ? you might even find that somewhere deep in the listings some of your very own relatives share a connection to Jane!

********************************

A hearty welcome to you Ron ? with thanks for sharing with us the history of your website!

JAIV:? What prompted you to get involved with this Austen family research project to begin with??

RD:? I grew up in Toronto, a city, and a wonderful city it is, whose civilised history only goes back for two centuries. All of my grandparents were English, but the thought of having interesting ancestors would have seemed too ridiculous to entertain. My paternal grandmother was the sort who wrote regularly to every English member of her and my grandfather?s families, and was always nattering about their current situations. In 1972, aged 25, I left Toronto to find work as a classical musician, and the idea of going to England, where there would be a ready-made family, was deeply appealing. Just before my departure, my grandmother told me that we had some sort of connection with the Austens, though she didn?t know what.

We must have been almost the only branch of descendants who?d lost sight of it!? I was pleased to be able to tell her, before she died, that Frank Austen [Jane's brother] was her great-great-grandfather.? It was difficult to get much further back than that in the 1970s, so I gave up the search to get on with work, and to raise my own brace of descendants. In 1998 my wife bought a computer for our kids and, Luddite that I am, I grumbled and scowled in the background ? till I thought that I might just see what it?s like.

I was soon drawn back to family history. The kids were old enough that they preferred neglect to parental attention and, though we met occasionally to fight over whose turn it was to use the computer. At the time I thought that it would stand to reason that the Austen genealogy had been exhausted, so for the next five years I worked through the seven non-Austen great-grandparents? lines, and just copied the charts in the backs of Jane Austen biographies.

When that was thoroughly exhausted I was addicted, and needed a fix! Simultaneously it became evident that the authors of the biographies had all copied the family charts from one another, and there was a lot further to go.? In particular they mainly recorded the male lines, dishonouring the women. I?ve found that not just Cassandra Leigh but George Austen too had eminent ancestors, which means that their records go back, potentially, to the beginning of recorded history.

Now I have a lifetime?s supply of fixes, and in retirement, a full time job.? Do not call it a hobby.? And don?t say that I?m obsessed. Oh well, all right, perhaps I am. This study means a lot more to me than just a growing collection of names ? it makes me feel organically connected, not just to the Austen family (and I don?t feel at all proprietorial about Jane) but to the whole of English history.

JAIV: Tell us something about Joan Corder and her manuscript, Akin to Jane ? how and when and where did you first come upon it ? what a find! ? and why did she not publish her research??

RD:? Joan Corder was born and lived through her life in the English county of Suffolk. She served as a young woman, during World War 2, in intelligence as a plotter, then moved back home to look after her widowed mother. She didn?t marry. Over the course of her life she became a distinguished herald and genealogist; Akin to Jane was her first big project.

It was to her enduring disappointment that she couldn?t interest a publisher ? so only two copies of the manuscript were made. One was presented to the Jane Austen Society and can be seen at the Jane Austen?s House Museum at Chawton, where it has been, presumably, consulted by most if not all of Jane Austen?s later biographers.

With use, the manuscript has become increasingly fragile; people still visit the Museum to inspect it. My Austen cousin Patrick Stokes scanned the work to help preserve it for posterity, and it?s his scans that are displayed on the website. The museum curator is pleased that she can now refer interested parties to the web, and retire the original.

[Ron says on the website: ?I would like to acknowledge and thank my Austen cousin, Patrick Stokes, who first brought the manuscript of?Akin to Jane?to my attention, and gave me a copy.?]

Joan Corder

?

JAIV:? What, of all the discoveries in your research, surprised you the most?

RD:? So many discoveries! They constantly amaze, but no longer surprise. ?I?ve been making a list, and intend to write articles about them. Here is a sample and though many of them seem improbable, they are all true.

1.? William IX, Duke of Aquitaine.? William was a leader of the 1101 Crusade.? He is best known today as the earliest troubadour ? a vernacular lyric poet in the Occitan language ? whose work has survived.? Grandfather of Eleanor of Aquitaine, and Jane Austen?s 19th-great-grandfather.
2.? Owain Glyndwr, Prince of Wales. Shakespeare?s Owen Glendower. Jane?s 13th-great-grandfather.

Owain Glyndwr ? the BBC

3. John King, Bishop of London, from 1611 (the year of the King James Bible) to 1621. John King ordained John Donne. Jane?s? 4th-great-grandfather.

4.? Faith Coghill, the wife of Sir Christopher Wren. The? 1st cousin once removed of George Austen.

5. Lizzie Throckmorton, the wife of Sir Walter Raleigh. A distant cousin of Cassandra Leigh.

Elizabeth Throckmorton

6.? Katherine Leigh, the wife of Robert Catesby, the Gunpowder plotter, another distant cousin.

7.? Both of Jane?s parents were descended from royalty. Cassandra was descended from John of Gaunt, the son of Edward III, so every previous English king, back to William the Conqueror, and some beyond, was her ancestor.? For George we have to go back two generations further, to Edward I.

8.? Some Scottish royalty ? the real-life Duncan I of Scotland who was either murdered by his cousin, the real-life Macbeth, or killed in battle against him.? Macbeth, as we know, succeeded him as King.? Duncan was Jane?s 21st-great-grandfather.

9.? By the way, we all know from Jane?s juvenilia that she ?preferred? Mary Queen of Scots to Queen Elizabeth. Well ? not only was she related to both, but in Jane Austen?s Sailor Brothers she is quoted favourably comparing her brother Frank with Queen Elizabeth.

Cassandra Austen?s Mary Queen of Scots ? The History of England

JAIV:? This is all wonderful!?
But I must ask, any real gossip ? things hidden for generations?

RD:? Ooh ? I?d be banished from the family if I revealed any of those!

JAIV: Oh, but the story of Elizabeth and Herbert is quite an interesting one! All hidden from the family and worthy of a Victorian novel! ?? or at least akin to the writers of Victorian novels, as the lives of Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins can attest! [see below for the link!]

JAIV:? Where do you go from here??

RD:? I began the web project thinking that I would be producing a revision of Akin to Jane , but it eventually became obvious that the plan was unworkable. I want the reader to be drawn to my research, and not to think that Joan Corder?s work was the end of it. She managed to record a little over 300 of George and Cassandra Austen?s descendants, and gave ancestors no attention. My genealogical database contains more than 1200 descendants ? that is, another 900 ? and another ten thousand people, who include ancestors, collateral families, and families of social connections. The address of that, by the way, is http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~janeausten.

There is a link beneath each individual in Akin to Jane to that database, but in the long run I plan to organise things better. I?ll spend next winter learning the html to create a proper design (you won?t know it, but the current one is improper), and intend to do wondrous things with a sidebar. That will take care of technicalities. I have only just begun thinking beyond the current content, and have decided that I will add more original family history source material. I believe that one can jinx plans by talking about them too soon, so I?ll do that when I know that the material can be used.

JAIV:? Is there a book in the works?

RD: I?m sorry. No book. Articles, yes. Though I?ve really enjoyed building the Jane Austen?s Family website, it has absorbed an immense amount of time ? time taken away from research, my first love.

?******************************************************?

Thank you Ron for joining us here today! [well, really you are at the JAS meeting at the Chawton House Library, and I am here in Vermont, but we can pretend, can?t we?]?- it has been delightful getting to know you via emails! and I very much?appreciate you sharing all this with us. What a gift of research you have given the Jane Austen world?

Now Dear Readers, it is time for you to journey through these ancestry files, both those of Joan Corder?s Akin to Jane manuscript, now transcribed for all to see on the website, as well as the expanded genealogical research at the Ancestry.com site that Ron has lovingly put together over these past how many years?! ? Ron makes it clear that this is still a work in progress [isn?t everything?] and he will continue to make changes to the set-up and continuously add content.? But it is best to just dive in and see all that is there ? [as an aside, so please forgive the intrusion,?I must say that I put in several of my family names (both my parents were born in England, so I knew there was a chance of some connection somewhere), and find that the mother of Sir Christopher Wren has my maiden name, and his wife, mentioned above [Faith Coghill] was a direct cousin to George Austen! ? now I have some serious sleuthing to do to find the exact connection ? but I have been quite annoying to friends and family these past few days since my discovery ? and not sure in any given minute whether to sit down and write a Novel, or get out my drafting table and design a Cathedral ? this genealogy stuff can be quite daunting!]

So back to the matter at hand ? let?s head into the Austen genealogy: to begin, go first to the main page: where you will see these links:

1. Akin to Jane ? Joan Corder?s original and transcribed manuscript ? click on this and you will find these links:

Akin to Jane title page

  • Jane Austen?s Family- Index of Names, and Lists: Corder?s notes on the Austen family, indexed by Austen family members, all surnames of the extended family ? you will find links to:

1.? Jane?s family and their descendants: George and Cassandra Austen; James Austen; George Austen; Edward Austen, later Knight; Henry Thomas Austen; Cassandra Elizabeth Austen; Francis William Austen; Jane Austen; and Charles John Austen

2. ?Index of people by surname: Austen Family; Austen-Leigh; Bradford, Hill and Hubback; Knatchbull; Knight; Lefroy and Purvis; and Rice

  • Highlights page ? oh! much here and much more to be added:

?There is good reason for the general reader to delve into this manuscript. One of Joan Corder?s informants, Miss Marcia Rice, who was 84 in 1954 when the work was written, was the granddaughter of Edward Knight?s daughter Elizabeth, and her husband Edward Royd Rice. Miss Rice wrote extensive memoirs of her family, which Joan Corder copied. Her recollections of her distant childhood were refracted through the most rosy of tinted spectacles; few could read those for her grandmother without needing the discreet use of a tissue. Here is a direct link to Elizabeth.

Please don?t stop with Elizabeth ? Miss Rice didn?t. She left a wonderful record immortalising her entire Rice family, from aunts who could be quirky or intellectual, to uncles who could be courageous or reckless. For many of them there are links in the text to portraits. Be sure not to neglect reading Miss Rice?s personal memories, on page 115; and those following, on her great-aunt Marianne Knight.? ?

  • Heraldry ? Eleven Coats of Arms: these are worthy of a website all their own!

Austen Coat-of-Arms

  • Joan Corder ? author of Akin to Jane: information on the author of the original family tree.
  • Author?s and Editor?s Notes: notes from both Corder and Dunning with explanations on how to use the Akin to Jane database and links to Dunning?s Roots Web database.
  • Contact Me ? Ronald Dunning: he would love to hear from you!

Ron Dunning

2.? Recent Research ? Ron?s explanation of his research that continues that of what is in Akin to Jane at the Jane Austen Family Tree website at RootsWeb:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=janeausten

3.?? Articles ? there are three articles now, more to be added:

  • ?An Unconventional Love Match?
  • ?The Last Welsh Prince of Wales ? Jane Austen?s Welsh Ancestry?
  • ?Latitude and Longitude?

Be sure to read all the extra links ? these often explain the contents and?how the database works; and do not miss all the illustrations that appear throughout the website:

http://www.janeaustensfamily.co.uk/akin-to-jane/text/illustrations-and-portraits.html

Vice Admiral Francis William Austen

Now the fun part: you really do need to explore ? but I shall give you this start ? the wonderful story noted on the ?Highlights Page??above of Elizabeth Austen [later Knight], daughter of Jane Austen?s brother Edward, from her grand-daughter Marcia Alice Rice, as written for Joan Corder in 1953:

http://www.janeaustensfamily.co.uk/akin-to-jane/text/edward/051a.html

?Image?of Elizabeth Austen-Knight Rice and her husband Edward Royd Rice

and then this quite romantic tale?that I mentioned above of another?Elizabeth and her husband Herbert: Herbert was the last?child of?Fanny Catherine Austen Knight Knatchbull?(Jane Austen?s favorite niece ? quite the mouthful! ? and later on they added Hugessen to the name!) -? here we have a tale of a secret marriage, he and his wife Elizabeth?living under an assumed name, Herbert never telling his mother, never telling his colleagues in Parliament, having many children ? all right out of a Victorian novel! : you can find it here on the ancestry.com website:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=janeausten&id=I3046

and you can read Ron?s take on the story and his research here:

http://www.janeaustensfamily.co.uk/articles/unconventional-love-match.html

So just dig around ? click on any link of interest ? there are treasures to be discovered lurking behind those links! ? whatever would Jane Austen make of all this do you think? ? would she be absolutely appalled to discover she was related to Queen Elizabeth?? I now wonder after all if even I am related to Queen Elizabeth ? and maybe you are too!

If you have any questions for Ron, please leave a comment here ? he is happy?to respond to any queries or suggestions?

A Review of General Roofing Materials and Design

Roofs are the main element in any building, especially in houses. Buildings could be considered unfinished and are uninhabitable. Yet, in the unlikely scenario that, for some unusual reason, your recently bought residence does not have a protective overhead lid, here is a guide to a number of the primary roof types and regularly used materials that you can utilize to cover that gaping hole over your head as fast as possible.

Two of the most popular designs for roofs in Manchester are the gable roof and the hip roof. A gable roof comprises two identical panels linked at an upward position. Its widespread usage lends to the fact that there are no unique layout considerations needed when setting one up. Then again, there are implications with living in an area where winds are always blowing.

Homeowners in hurricane-prone areas should replace their gable roofs with other designs that can endure winds, like the hip roof. Hip roofs can sidetrack winds and are well suited for houses in windy areas. No matter what style you decide on, roofers encourage the following materials for building general-purpose roofs.

Metal has become a preferred option for NH roofers who have done modern residences. It is absolutely lighter than conventional roof covering materials like wood and asphalt, allowing it to be effortless to build. Additionally, thanks to technological advances that has rendered metal more flexible, metal roofs now are available in different shapes and styles to mimic the look of wood and tile shingles. Metal shingles are not at risk of burning from prolonged sun exposure; on the contrary, its special roofing properties enable the material to reflect warmth off the roof, and keep the temperature inside the house.

Asphalt, however, is the most preferred material used in American houses. Its widespread use in roofing NH homes is undeniable evidence of its sturdiness. Moreover, given that asphalt is easily available in any vicinity with a home improvement center, repair and replacement is quick and easy.

No matter what the material or design that you finally go for your roof structure, make certain that your choices fit the conditions of your location. Right now, the prominent trend in Manchester NH roofing has slowly transferred away from do-it-yourself roofing projects, which typically result in shoddily built frames, to expert construction by qualified roofing companies that provide outstanding workmanship. Browse homerenovations.about.com/od/houseexteriorframework/a/artroofmaterial.htm for more detailed information on widely used roofing materials.

Controversial Spewed Iron Experiment Succeeds as Carbon Sink

News | Energy & Sustainability

Dumping iron into the ocean stimulates blooms of diatoms that pull down carbon dioxide in the atmosphere--but only under the right conditions

Fertilizing the ocean with iron could help reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, according to newly released findings of a research cruise. Why? In a word, diatoms.

A hunger for iron rules the microscopic sea life of the Southern Ocean surrounding ice-covered Antarctica. Cut off from most continental dirt and dust, the plankton, diatoms and other life that make up the broad bottom of the food chain there can't get enough iron to grow. And that's why some scientists think that artificially fertilizing such waters with the metal could promote blooms that suck CO2 out of the air. Then, when these microscopic creatures die, they would sink to the bottom of the ocean and take the carbon with them.

Such blooms occur naturally, of course, so the first part of the hypothesis is not controversial. What remained questionable until now is whether such blooms in fact sequestered much carbon or if it was being quickly recycled back into the atmosphere. The problem for scientists is that oceanic waters tend to mix, which makes monitoring and delineating an experiment in the ocean challenging.

The solution, devised by biological oceanographer Victor Smetacek of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Germany and his colleagues, was to use an eddy. Such swirling currents can be remarkably self-contained. In fact, the new research to be published in Nature on July 19 shows that less than 10 percent of the eddy's waters mixed with the surrounding ocean. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.)

With such ideal conditions, the group dissolved seven metric tons of iron sulfate in acidic seawater and spewed the solution into the ship's propeller wash starting on February 13, 2004, covering a circular patch in the eddy of some 167 square kilometers. That's the equivalent of adding 0.01 gram of iron per square meter, levels similar to those found in the wake of a melting iceberg. They then monitored the fate of the patch off and on for five weeks, while also adding supplemental iron fertilizer after two weeks to keep concentrations high enough to promote growth.

As expected, microscopic sea life bloomed. Chaetoceros atlanticus, Corethron pennatum, Thalassiothrix antarcticus and nine other species of diatoms grew in abundance, boosting the amounts of chlorophyll, organic carbon and other signs of life in the waters to depths of as much as 100 meters beneath the surface.

By the middle of the third week after the researchers stopped adding iron, the bloom began to die. So many diatoms died, in fact, that they overwhelmed any natural systems for decay and fell in large numbers below 500 meters in depth. At least half of the total bloom biomass sank below 3,000 meters, according to the scientists' calculations. Fresh diatom cell corpses littered the seafloor as well, and the research team believes that much of the bloom ended at the bottom as a layer of fluff. "Since the aggregates sank so rapidly and the water column was more or less 'empty' on day 50, they must have settled out," Smetacek argues. "Layers of fluff have been reported from various regions, including the Southern Ocean."
