BitTorrent working on file-sync app: sounds like Dropbox, calls itself Sync

BitTorrent working on filesync app sounds like Dropbox, calls itself Sync

BitTorrent has announced that it's working on its very own file-synchronization app -- and it's already looking for a limited number of test subjects for its pre-Alpha stage. So far, the premise is to offer identical copies of your files on all machines, all sounding pretty similar to how you use iCloud, Skydrive or Dropbox, although there would be no cloud-caching. According to GigaOM, files will be protected by 256-bit encryption, with native test apps for Mac, Windows and Linux (alongside NAS integration) already in testing. There's no mobile version just yet, but BitTorrent has stated that it's "committed to mobile across the board," and, well, it's still pre-Alpha. If you're up for trying another file sync service, the company is recruiting willing participants over at the source.

Organic ferroelectric molecule shows promise for memory chips, sensors

Friday, January 25, 2013

At the heart of computing are tiny crystals that transmit and store digital information's ones and zeroes. Today these are hard and brittle materials. But cheap, flexible, nontoxic organic molecules may play a role in the future of hardware.

A team led by the University of Washington in Seattle and the Southeast University in China discovered a molecule that shows promise as an organic alternative to today's silicon-based semiconductors. The findings, published this week in the journal Science, display properties that make it well suited to a wide range of applications in memory, sensing and low-cost energy storage.

"This molecule is quite remarkable, with some of the key properties that are comparable with the most popular inorganic crystals," said co-corresponding author Jiangyu Li, a UW associate professor of mechanical engineering.

The new carbon-based material could offer even cheaper ways to store digital information; provide a flexible, nontoxic material for medical sensors that would be implanted in the body; and create a cheaper, lighter material to harvest energy from natural vibrations.

The new molecule is a ferroelectric, meaning it is positively charged on one side and negatively charged on the other, where the direction can be flipped by applying an electrical field. Synthetic ferroelectrics are now used in some displays, sensors and memory chips.

In the study the authors pitted their new molecule against barium titanate, a long-known ferroelectric material that is a standard for performance. Barium titanate is a ceramic crystal and contains titanium; it has largely been replaced in industrial applications by better-performing but lead-containing alternatives.

The new molecule holds its own against the standard-bearer. It has a natural polarization, a measure of how strongly the molecules align to store information, of 23, compared to 26 for barium titanate. To Li's knowledge this is the best organic ferroelectric discovered to date.

A recent study in Nature announced an organic ferroelectric that works at room temperature. By contrast, this molecule retains its properties up to 153 degrees Celsius (307 degrees F), even higher than for barium titanate.

The new molecule also offers a full bag of electric tricks. Its dielectric constant ? a measure of how well it can store energy ? is more than 10 times higher than for other organic ferroelectrics. And it's also a good piezoelectric, meaning it's efficient at converting movement into electricity, which is useful in sensors.

The new molecule is made from bromine, a natural element isolated from sea salt, mixed with carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen (its full name is diisopropylammonium bromide). Researchers dissolved the elements in water and evaporated the liquid to grow the crystal. Because the molecule contains carbon, it is organic, and pivoting chemical bonds allow it to flex.

The molecule would not replace current inorganic materials, Li said, but it could be used in applications where cost, ease of manufacturing, weight, flexibility and toxicity are important.

Li is working on a number of projects relating to ferroelectricity. Last year he and his graduate student found the first evidence for ferroelectricity in soft animal tissue. He was co-author on a 2011 paper in Sciencethat documents nanometer-scale switching in ferroelectric films, showing how such molecules could be used to store digital information.

"Ferroelectrics are pretty remarkable materials," Li said. "It allows you to manipulate mechanical energy, electrical energy, optics and electromagnetics, all in a single package."

He is working to further characterize this new molecule and explore its combined electric and mechanical properties. He also plans to continue the search for more organic ferroelectrics.

New Synthetic Polymer Is First to Match Rigidity of DNA or Collagen

The stiff supergel mimics cell scaffolding such that a cold solution of it poured on to a wound could quickly form a gel barrier when it warmed to body temperature

Take one kilogram of polyisocyanide polymer. Sprinkle liberally across an Olympic swimming pool. Warm gently. Within minutes, your jelly is ready. Serves 25 million.

Alan Rowan, a materials chemist at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands, is describing the properties of a remarkable polymer developed in his lab and unveiled today in Nature. He has not actually run the swimming-pool experiment, but he sounds as if he would love to give it a try. When it comes to forming gels, he says excitedly, his polymer is ?probably the best in the world ? an order of magnitude better than anything else?.

But it offers much more than record-breaking dessert portions: it is the first synthetic polymer that can match the rigidity found in many biological polymers, says Margaret Gardel, a biophysicist at the University of Chicago, Illinois, who wrote a News and Views article to accompany the publication. ?Nearly all biopolymers, like DNA or collagen, have some inherent rigidity,? she explains; synthetic polymers, by contrast, tend to be extremely floppy.

Rowan?s polymer strands have a helical backbone with thousands of short peptides jutting out from the sides, each carrying long tails made of repeating carbon and oxygen chains. Nitrogen and hydrogen atoms in neighboring peptides bond to each other to give the backbone rigidity, and the carbon and oxygen tails readily grab water molecules, making the polymer extremely soluble.

The polymer has a helical backbone (red) and tails (blue) that link to neighbouring strands.
Image: Kouwer, P. H. J. et al. Nature

Strong structure
Once the polymer is dissolved, warming it causes the tails to squeeze water molecules away and form links with neighboring polymer strands. Above a certain temperature, the solution transforms into a gel in seconds as the strands self-assemble into bundles roughly 10 nanometers wide. As with the biopolymers in a living cell, or the fibers in a rope, the bundling stiffens the whole structure. ?The nanoscale mechanism is the same as at the macroscale,? says Rowan.

Researchers already knew that bundling was important in strengthening biopolymers. But Rowan?s team has measured the stiffness of individual strands and of the bundles, and has shown the relationship between the two. ?Now that we understand the principles, we can start making gels at even lower concentrations,? predicts Rowan.

The polymer?s ability to form a gel on heating is relatively unusual: the opposite is true for most gels. A gelatin solution, for example, must be cooled to form jelly. Rowan imagines that a cold solution of his polymer poured on to a wound to protect the tissue would quickly form a gel barrier when it warmed to body temperature; applying an ice pack could liquefy it when it was no longer needed. The researchers are now running tests on this concept, ?using a leg of pork that we put in the oven at 40 ?C?, says Rowan.

Starbucks stays hot in U.S., Asia; shares rise

(Reuters) - Starbucks Corp reported stronger-than-expected sales in the United States and Asia despite economic uncertainty worldwide, offsetting unexpected costs including the bill for cleaning up after Superstorm Sandy.

Shares in the world's biggest coffee chain rose 1.9 percent in after-hours trade on Thursday, even though the company's first-quarter profit matched but did not exceed Wall Street estimates and it merely repeated its forecasts for the full year. Starbucks often tops profit expectations and raises forecasts.

Seattle-based Starbucks is frequented by affluent consumers with extra money to spend on premium drinks like lattes and mochas, but the chain's executives joined industry peers in adopting a cautious stance for the new year, largely because of concerns that this month's U.S. payroll tax increase could depress consumer spending.

It's too early to tell whether the tax hike that is reducing take-home pay will have an impact on the company's business, Chief Financial Officer Troy Alstead told Reuters.

Starbucks' results landed a day after fellow restaurant bellwether McDonald's Corp reported an unexpected rise in December sales at established U.S. restaurants. But McDonald's also warned that its January same-restaurant sales would fall as it follows strong year-ago results and fights for the business of budget-conscious diners.

"We don't know where the consumer is going to shake out this year," Edward Jones analyst Jack Russo said.

U.S. AND ASIA STRONG

Starbucks reported net earnings of $432.2 million, or 57 cents per share, for the fiscal first quarter that ended December 30, meeting the average analyst estimate compiled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. That was up from $382.1 million, or 50 cents per share, a year earlier.

Overall revenue jumped almost 11 percent to $3.80 billion during the quarter, which is Starbucks' biggest for sales.

Global sales at stores open at least 13 months were up 6 percent - topping the 5.5 percent rise analysts polled by Consensus Metrix had expected. Performance was helped by a 4 percent increase in traffic and a 2 percent increase in average spending per visit.

Same-store sales rose 7 percent in the U.S.-dominated Americas region - which contributes about 75 percent of overall revenue at Starbucks - and topped analysts' estimate of 5.9 percent.

Sales at established shops were up 11 percent in the China/Asia Pacific region and down 1 percent in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Results from Asia were better than expected, while EMEA was a bit worse.

Executives said they were pleased with the performance of the new Verismo single-cup coffee and espresso brewer. More than 150,000 Verismo brewers were sold in the first quarter, CFO Alstead told Reuters.

Overall operating margin expanded 40 basis points to 16.6 percent, despite a contraction in the Americas due to expenses related to Superstorm Sandy in the United States, litigation and a large conference the company hosted.

Seattle-based Starbucks reiterated its forecasts for the full year, including earnings per share of $2.06 to $2.15.

Shares in Starbucks rose 1.9 percent to $55.62 in extended trading after closing at $54.57.

A Creative Writer Braves the Inauguration | The Artist's Road

This is not a post about politics. It is about a creative writer struggling to maintain an art-committed life.

It was great to have a ticket for standing room space on Capitol Hill, but by the time we got through security our view of the festivities was blocked by a tree. It's a good thing this wasn't an April inauguration, as they used to be, or that tree would have been covered in leaves.

It was great to have a ticket for standing room space on Capitol Hill, but by the time we got through security our view of the festivities was blocked by a tree. It?s a good thing this wasn?t an April inauguration, as they used to be, or that tree would have been covered in leaves.

The story begins with a trip to the second Inauguration of President Barack Obama. I was one of approximately 500,000 people to make my way to Washington, D.C.?s National Mall Monday to witness the ceremony. I somehow suppressed my agoraphobia during the entire day, which included packed Metro trains and stations, an hours-long security line, and of course the masses of bodies surrounding me at the base of Capitol Hill during the ceremony itself.

I was there as a loyal supporter of the President, but also as a creative writer. I am everywhere now as a creative writer, ever since I chose three or so years ago to embrace that identity. I can?t turn off that filter on my world.

It was easier to watch the President on a large screen through another tree.

It was easier to watch the President on a large screen through another tree.

So when I listened to the President?s speech, I appreciated its substance, including strong language calling for us to address climate change. But I also appreciated when the prose advanced the substance, such as when he took us through a lineage of rights struggles for women, blacks and gays: ?We, the people, declare today that the most evident of truths ? that all of us are created equal ? is the star that guides us still; just as it guided our forebears through Seneca Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall.?

Now I'm looking west, past the Capitol reflecting pool. Crowds reached the Washington Monument.

Now I?m looking west, past the Capitol reflecting pool. Crowds reached the Washington Monument.

I found myself, however, channeling my third semester Vermont College of Fine Arts instructor, who always wanted me to make better use of metaphor. Ronald Reagan famously did this in his shining-city-on-a-hill speech, which was an homage to a 17th Century John Winthrop sermon. I found metaphor in poet Richard Blanco?s reading. Blanco was a guest writer at one of my VCFA residencies, and it was great to hear him read a poem written for the occasion. It dripped with compelling imagery. But?and I say this with the greatest respect to him?I have learned at VCFA readings that there is not a direct correlation between a poem?s length and its beauty. Speaking for most of the half-million attendees who had been standing for hours in the bitter cold, if you read after the President?s address and before Beyonce sings, you might want to keep your reading short.

We spent several hours jammed on First Street NW, waiting for the orange gate to open; no one was telling us what the delay was, and I'm still not entirely clear on that.

We spent several hours jammed on First Street NW, waiting for the orange gate to open; no one was telling us what the delay was, and I?m still not entirely clear on that.

I would have welcomed a speech by Vice President Biden, although he?s never been one to keep an address short. I?m a big fan of the man President Obama on election night called the ?happy warrior,? an homage to William Wordsworth?s poem about the death of Lord Nelson. But Biden demonstrated his passion in his strong enunciation of the oath administered to him by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Both the President and Vice President had been officially sworn in on Sunday, the 20th, as the Constitution stipulates. This was a mere re-creation. But you?d never know it from the happy warrior, who embraced with perhaps more enthusiasm I?ve ever seen another chance at a job one holder of that office compared unfavorably to a bucket of warm spit.

And where does all of this tie in with my struggle to maintain an art-committed life? Well before dawn on Monday, I arose to get in an hour of creative writing, work on the memoir I am determined to complete during my final VCFA semester. Yesterday morning I again arose before the sun, to work on a personal essay I?m writing for a local magazine, before driving my kids to school and myself to my day job. This morning I again greeted the dark as I returned to the memoir. I am now finishing this post before heading into work.

We cleared security just as Chuck Schumer began the official ceremonies. Were it not for our collective fear of antagonizing the TSA agents working the metal detectors, I'm sure some of us would have been freaking out by now.

We cleared security just as Chuck Schumer began the official ceremonies. Were it not for our collective fear of antagonizing the TSA agents working the metal detectors, I?m sure some of us would have been freaking out by now.

This is a difficult time of year for me to rise so early. Along with agoraphobia, I suffer from seasonal affective disorder, which cripples my mood each winter. It helped tank the end of my last VCFA residency. And it took some of the edge off of an otherwise delightful Monday on the Mall.

But I am making use of the whiteboard wall behind my desk, where I track my writing projects in progress. Across its eight-foot length, in foot-tall letters, are the words ?WRITE.EVERY.DAY.? So I do.

Adafruit Gemma stuffs wearable Arduino into a oneinch disc

Adafruit's Flora wearable platform is barely a year old, yet it already has a little sibling on the way -- and we do mean little. The newer Gemma is Arduino-programmable over USB like its relative, but measures just over half the size of the Flora at an inch in diameter. It's even bordering on cute, as far as circuit boards go. Before developing any grand visions of wearable computers, though, be aware that Gemma's features scale down with its size: there's only three input/output pins, and a limited amount of memory won't let it handle more than about a dozen of Adafruit's NeoPixel lights. All the same, any aspiring tailor willing to trade flexibility for subtlety in a costume will likely want to sign up for notification of the Gemma's in-stock date at the source link.

Tim Cook On Growth Of Apple Maps: ?Usage Is Higher Prior To iOS 6 Release?, Promises ?Continued Improvements?

4925267732_8b4a2cf887_zOne of the most embarrassing happenings in recent Apple history was the launch of its own Maps offering with iOS 6. People were getting lost and wondering why Apple decided to cut Google out of the OS at all. Google has since released its own iOS version of its apps product, and so far the feedback has been impressive. During today’s Q1 2013 earnings call, Cook discussed where Apple is with the product, saying “We’re going to keep working on this until it lives up to our incredible high standards.” Before completely apologizing for the launch, Apple said time and again that it was very early days for its own version of Maps, and that it was “just getting started.“ In September, Cook finally apologized for the release, saying: To our customers, At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better. We launched Maps initially with the first version of iOS. As time progressed, we wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and vector-based maps. In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps from the ground up. There are already more than 100 million iOS devices using the new Apple Maps, with more and more joining us every day. In just over a week, iOS users with the new Maps have already searched for nearly half a billion locations. The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you. While we?re improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app. Everything we do at Apple is aimed at making our products the best in the world. We know that you expect that from us, and we will keep working non-stop until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard. Tim Cook Apple?s CEO Today was a bit of

Image sensors out of a spray can

Jan. 22, 2013 ? Researchers from Technische Universit?t M?nchen (TUM) have developed a new generation of image sensors that are more sensitive to light than the conventional silicon versions, with the added bonus of being simple and cheap to produce. They consist of electrically conductive plastics, which are sprayed on to the sensor surface in an ultra-thin layer. The chemical composition of the polymer spray coating can be altered so that even the invisible range of the light spectrum can be captured. This opens up interesting new development possibilities for low-cost infrared sensors aimed at compact cameras and smartphones .

Image sensors are at the core of every digital camera. Before a snapshot appears on the display, the sensors first convert the light from the lens to electrical signals. The image processor then uses these to create the final photo.

Many compact and cellphone cameras contain silicon-based image sensors produced using CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) technology. Prof. Paolo Lugli and Dr. Daniela Baierl from TUM have developed a cost-effective process to improve the performance of these CMOS sensors. Their approach revolves around an ultra-thin film made of organic compounds, in other words plastics.

The challenge lay in applying the plastic solution to the surface of the image sensors. The researchers tested spin- and spray-coating methods to apply the plastic in its liquid, solution form as precisely and cost-effectively as possible. They were looking for a smooth plastic film that is no more than a few hundred nanometers thick. Spray-coating was found to be the best method, using either a simple spray gun or a spray robot.

Thin coating with high sensitivity to light

Organic sensors have already proven their worth in tests: They are up to three times more sensitive to light than conventional CMOS sensors, whose electronic components conceal some of the pixels, and therefore the photoactive silicon surface.

Organic sensors can be manufactured without the expensive post-processing step typically required for CMOS sensors, which involves for example applying micro-lenses to increase the amount of captured light. Every part of every single pixel, including the electronics, is sprayed with the liquid polymer solution, giving a surface that is 100 percent light-sensitive. The low noise and high frame rate properties of the organic sensors also make them a good fit for cameras.

Potential for developing low-cost infrared sensors

Another advantage of the plastic sensors is that different chemical compounds can be used to capture different parts of the light spectrum. For example, the PCBM and P3HT polymers are ideal for the detection of visible light. Other organic compounds, like squaraine dyes, are sensitive to light in the near-infrared region.

"By choosing the right organic compounds, we are able to develop new applications that were too costly up until now," explains Prof. Paolo Lugli, who holds the Chair of Nanoelectronics at TUM. "The future uses of organic infrared sensors include driver assistance systems for night vision and regular compact and cellphone cameras. Yet, the lack of suitable polymers is the main hurdle."

Ceiling Trends for 2013 | ComFree Blog

Ceiling trends for 2013When renovating any room, whether it?s the kitchen, living room or bedroom, it?s easy to forget about the ?fifth wall?: the ceiling. Though it?s often an afterthought for DIY interior designers, the ceiling is an important part of any room?s aesthetic.

A plain white ceiling ? or worse still, a ceiling with cracks, stains or holes ? can cause even the best decorated room to fall flat. Renovating your ceilings is a relatively simple way to add visual appeal and value to your home, as well as a good way to try out current color and texture trends on a smaller scale instead of repainting all four walls.

Designers predict that ceiling trends for 2013 will see d?cor in bright, heavily saturated colors, inspired by the punched-up look of the hi-res graphics that have become ubiquitous in television and advertisements. A great way to try this out in your home is to brighten up your ceiling with a new coat of paint.

When choosing a color for painting the ceiling, there are a few things you should consider.

Choose a color that complements the walls and d?cor

Painting the ceiling an accent color (the color of smaller details in furniture?s fabric patterns, for instance) will give the room a coordinated, pulled-together look.

Paint high ceilings a deeper shade

Going a shade deeper than walls will visually balance the high open space with the furnished area below. Conversely, a room with low ceilings will feel less cramped if the ceiling and walls are kept similar colors.

Consider the psychological and emotional effects of color

Blues and violets are soothing and calming, ideal for bedrooms or lounges. Warmer hues, such as reds and oranges, invigorate and stimulate appetite, and thus are ideal for kitchens and dining rooms.

Ceiling trends 2013Choose a flat finish paint

To hide imperfections like cracks or bumps, choose paint with a flat finish, which reflects less light and gives the impression of smooth, seamless color.

Colors expected to be big in 2013 include:
? Yellow
? Black
? Mint green
? Blue

Also on the rise are glossy stretch ceilings: ceiling covers consisting of fabric or polyvinyl chloride membrane film stretched across a perimeter track. This material presents a wide array of decorating options, as well as practical benefits.

Stretch ceilings offer several benefits over plain painted ceilings:

? A properly installed stretch ceiling can improve the acoustic parameters of your room, or even soundproof the room. This can help keep the cacophony of noisy electronics and loud activities in dens, game rooms or family rooms, without disturbing the quiet in nearby bedrooms or offices.

? With a wide variety of colors and textures, and even an option to photo-print images onto the material, these ceilings can match any home?s aesthetic. Fabrics with computer-generated photographic designs will be big in 2013, so why not incorporate that into your ceiling? High gloss, satin and metallic finishes are available as well, and translucent materials allow for creative lighting such as projection or backlighting.

? Stretch ceilings are fire retardant, water repellent, and made from eco-friendly materials. They?re washable, non-toxic and hygienic, too.

Homey, cozy looks are also big for 2013, particularly when it comes to kitchen ceilings. Rustic materials with an antique or vintage appearance, such as wood or natural crackle-glazed tiles, are popular ways to achieve this look.

Installing a wood ceiling in your kitchen can help incorporate this theme into your d?cor, but bear in mind that this can be a bit pricey. A cheaper alternative is wood laminate, which is often more durable than hardwood, but can sometimes appear unnatural.

So remember, when updating your home?s look to embrace the ceiling trends for 2013 in design and d?cor, don?t forget to send us the pics!

Do your homework on your target area. Try sites like City-data.com to see foreclosed homes, housing backlogs, average time on market for your zip code, and median selling prices. You can also learn about local employers, unemployment rates, and income levels. In some cases, a good location and product may override the local trend.

Be sure to save up the down payment your mortgage loan servicing company requires. The alternative to a proper down payment is PMI, or private mortgage insurance. This adds up to extra money you will need to pay monthly in order to show the lender you can make the mortgage payments.

As you can see from the above list of tips, buying real estate can be a bit daunting when you first start, but applying a bit of common sense and doing your research can put you ahead of the game. After applying these tips, you should become a property buyer who is smart.
